Hundreds of burning candles and the wonderful acoustics in the Portuguese Synagogue set the stage for unique evening concerts. Sacha van Ravenswade is a tenor, specialized in both synagogue music and opera.
Van Ravenswade is performing a selection of hazzanut (synagogue music) of his own choosing. Some of these are sung in Ladino, the language of Jews from Spain and Portugal. The other half of the concert consist of opera songs sung in Italian.
At 16, Sacha van Ravenswade (1989) began his training to become a hazzan (or cantor, the singer leading services at the synagogue). He currently is Head Hazzan at the Raw Aron Schuster Synagogue in the south of Amsterdam. He’s studying classical singing with tenor Marcel Reijans. Accompanying him for this concert at the Portuguese Synagogue, is pianist Maarten Hillenius.
